PURPOSE OF POSITION:

  • Responsible for safe, cost-effective, and compliant transport of all animal movements.  Strategic development and implementation of transportation services aligned with objectives of Operating Directors. 
  • As a member of Senior Leadership Team, this individual is responsible for development and integration of company strategy along with the promotion of Iowa Select Core Values with company employees and contractors.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Budget responsibilities for all live animal transport and transport facilities
  • Develop and meet budgeted financial goals for transportation.
  • Continually evaluate current practices and new opportunities to improve efficiency of the transportation and scheduling systems.
  • As a service provider to the production operations group, adhere to biosecurity and well- being policies of the production team and develop a culture of service and teamwork within departments with direct oversight.
  • As a key communicator to external customers, maintain a professional service-oriented approach in customer communications and interactions.
  • Assist with hiring of both company employees and contracted service providers.
  • Computer knowledge/ skills -- able to run reports, data entry, email, word documents, excel.
  • Willingness to become proficient in knowledge of current scheduling software
  • Responsible for ensuring employees work in a safe manner and use personal protective equipment (PPE) when required,
  • Keep employees motivated to perform at a high level to achieve production results and ensure all employees are being properly trained on SOPs.
  • Hiring, training, development and retention of company employed and owner/operator drivers. Results will be monitored by:
    • Safety of drivers
    • Retention rates
    • Implementation of the PeopleCare Leadership Program (PLP) process
    • Reviews
    • Feedback
    • Action plans for development
  • Provide oversight of outside transport contractors including but not limited to recruitment of new crews, training and development on ISF policies, ensuring that welfare, biosecurity and ISF core values are maintained.
  • Provide oversight of all transport fleet and facility maintenance and repair. 
  • Responsible for compliance with FMCSA and IA DOT rules and regulations.
  • Flexibility in hours during health and staffing challenges is required.
  • Constant collaboration with other departments within the company.
  • Demonstrated success in employee management and development
  • Timely partnering with appropriate departments when made aware of policy violations.
  • Any other task as assigned by supervisor.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This position directly supervises employees and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. 
  • Planning, assigning, and directing work responsibilities for others will be a major part of this position
  • Maintaining staffing levels needed to meet company goals which can include involvement in interviewing and hiring processes.
  • Provides employees, both current and new with updated training on positions that fall under applicable department(s).
  • Be effective in conflict resolution by addressing conflict quickly to keep moral high.
  • Coordinates with human resources to respond to employee concerns or complaints.
  • Handles discipline and termination of employees as needed and in accordance with company policy
  • Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive
  • Rewarding employees in the form of positive feedback and utilization of company programs when performance in key areas is high.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position is performed indoors.
  • This position may require some tasks to be performed in outside weather conditions.
  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee might be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibrations.  
  • This job operates in an office that is climate controlled and includes hazards typical to that environment
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

 

PHYSICALITY REQUIREMENTS

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear. 
  • Ability to frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.    
  • The employee must have the ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.

 

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

  • This is a full-time position that will require a minimum of 40 hours per week
  • Expected days and hours of operation include day-shift hours Monday-Fridays
  • Additional availability may be required during staffing challenges

 

TRAVEL

  • Might include occasional travel

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 5 years leadership experience in the transportation field
