Feed Mill General Manager

Job Description:

Feed Mill General Manager is responsible for overseeing the production, quality, costs, and safety of the mill which produces feed for animals. meeting or exceeding regulatory compliance ( e.g. USDA, GMP’s OSHA, Environmental, etc.)

Essential duties:

  • Review production records, Oversees all feed production and delivery activities
  • Schedule feed production
  • Keep inventory of feed ingredients and order as needed
  • Test and review feed/grain quality
  • Schedule employee shifts and keep track of employee time
  • Handle customer questions and complaints
  • Evaluate operating procedures
  • Set quality assurance standards
  • Prepare and monitor monthly, quarterly and yearly budgets
  • Stay up to date on new technology and ways to make process improvements
  • Train new employees and provide development opportunities
  • Ensure all employees are trained on safety and continue to stay up to date
  • Maintain filling equipment and other equipment needed to perform duties such as loaders, scales etc.
  • Work with company nutritionist and related vendors to ensure high quality, cost effective, and value[1]added feed products.
  •  Understand and ensure compliance with all transportation, environmental, and feed production regulations and policies.
  • Focus on biosecurity, efficiency, value, and timeliness
  • Monitors all feed production equipment, facility, and truck maintenance and repairs
  • Maintains all required records and documentation related to production, drug/supplement usage and feed transportation.
  • Provide information and recommendations to upper management related to feed production/transport, and related cost reductions opportunities

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Three to five years’ experience in feed mill and management.
  • Strong leadership and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to build a strong team  
  • Familiar with livestock production and transportation
  • Efficient in calculations, cost/benefit analysis and complex scheduling methods
  •  Individual must be dedicated, motivated, and able to work independently
  •  Basic computer skills
  • Valid driver’s license and insurable under company guidelines o May be required to obtain a CDL •
  • Work well with livestock customers and mill personnel

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Resolves routine problems with discrepancies that arise while performing daily tasks.
  • Manages multiple tasks and projects simultaneously and prioritizes work accordingly.
  • Applies basis reasoning skills and carries out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret data and draw logical conclusions based on the available inputs.
  • Applies critical thinking skills in standardized situations as well as non-routine problems.

Safety Skills

  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures and adhere to safety requirements as well as Animal Welfare Compliance
  • Must wear required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

 

Physical requirements:

  • Frequently uses visual skills to read numbers and details in small print as well as to read computerized data.
  • Frequently talks and receives auditory information.
  • Frequently uses fine finger and hand manipulation skills to pick up and move paperwork as well as to operate the computer.
  • Walk in and on the outside of the facility continuously.
  • Must be able to withstand hot and cold temperatures and wet environments
  • Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, stand and walk for long periods of time.
